From October 1999 to February 2007 Fraser Trainer was Creative
Director of the London Sinfonietta’s education programme.
He still continues to work regularly for the ensemble on a freelance
basis and takes a very active role in the creative life of
the organisation, working closely with many of its extremely
talented and versatile musicians.
Through this collaboration he has also built strong relationships
with many other British composers; Mark-Anthony Turnage, Simon
Holt, George Benjamin, Simon Bainbridge, Robert Saxton, David
Sawer and Sir Harrison Birtwistle. He is regularly invited
to direct composition projects in all corners of the globe
based on the music of the worlds leading composers such as
Steve Reich, John Adams, HK Gruber, Gyorgy Ligeti, Toru Takemitsu, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, Pierre
Boulez and Olivier Messiaen.
With the Sinfonietta, Fraser has held responsibilities relating
to the artistic planning of projects, leading workshops and
training musicians and teachers in the field of practical
music education. Over the last few years he has helped the
orchestra pioneer the development of internet projects designed
to give teachers and pupil’s greater access to the wide
range of resources that the ensemble has to offer. He has
been at forefront of its development as a major force in British
music education since beginning his work with the ensemble
